Activity 3 1-20-11

Tubes with different gases in them!
Different colors with different gases.  Purple, organe, and blue
Gas 1-orange- gas is neon. What i see is spectrum items. These glasses are defractuating glasses. They slightly look like the colorings of a cd. Acts like a prism. Left and right horizontal with the orange, i see lines that is slightly rainbow type thing. Right side lines starts with yellow, organge, orange, brighter orange then more red items. I see more lines then helium. Approximetley counting 50 lines.

Gas 2-whitish color- gass is hellium (He)With this second gas that is a whiteish color i see different different lights around it. The ones that are on top and bottom of the machine are vertical and the ones that are right and left are horizontal. The left side goes dark blue lighter blue and then a very light blue yellow then a darker yellow and then red. This is then vice versa for the left side where it starts with red on the outside and moves in. When i look at the two line spectrums i see fewer lines.
Gas 3-Argon (Ar)- This one was slightly harder to see then all of the rest because it only has two little things around. It has dark purple surrounded around by it.  The series of lines is to the right and left again.

Gas 4- Nitrogen (N)- This one was alot easier to see then the previous was. On left side it start with oragne and works it way into blue and then on the right side it starts with blue and works its way to red. The colors are very clear and distinct to identify which color is which.

Gas 5- Carbion Dioxide- This one is a litte dimmer but it starts with almost a dark red maroon coor and its works its way into a dark purple blue on the left side and on the right side it does just the opposite. This one was alot of darker colors that are harder to identify when talking about the general colors we are able to identify with no fancy name.

Activity 2 1-20-11

1. Write the formula for Tums? How does Tums chemically react with water and stomach acid?
formula for Tumms:
          CaCO3 -> Ca +2 (aq) + CO3-2(aq)
     insouble compund in H2O
    Calcite, Limestone and CHALK
Chemically react with watera nd stomach acid:
CO3-2 + H+ à HCO3- + H+ à CO3 à ß H2O +CO2

Carbonate                   bicarbonate             Carbonic Acid               Carbon Dioxide Gas

backing soda                                                 sizzling up. Evolution of gas

2. How many Tums are needed to neutralize a can of coke? To neutralize a can of coke, you will need any where from 3-5 tums.

Activity 1 1-20-11

1.Reflect on the expansion of water and salt water experiments you and your classmates performed. What are some of the interesting results and struggles with this experiment?
For our homework we had about measuring water, first off i was slightly confused that we needed two different cups one with water and one with water and salt. I started this experiment by putting water in the cup at room temperature and i took notes on what happened there, and I also put salt on the ice when I was done with the experiment to see what would happen to the ice with salt on it.

After hearing the other classmates talk about what they did for their experiment, I was able to get a better understand of what I was supposed to do, but they gave pretty good explanations of what happened I was able to see what happened and what they concluded with. I found it very interesting that the water with salt in it would fluctuate in height. On the board it was stated that the water with salt started at 3.0 but then went to 3.4 and back down to 3.3. That is very interesting that it did that because you think it would keep getting higher like just the water did.

A struggle i had with this experiment was 1. i didn't know we were suppose to two cups, so I didn't know when to put the salt in and when not to put it in. and 2. It was very hard to measure my cup because I used a plastic cup we received in the dorms and it didn't have any measurements on the side, so I wasn't able to measure how tall it actually was. All I measured on the cup was the length across the top of the cup and how much water i put in my cup. I put 2 cups of water in my cup. If i went back to measure how tall 2 cups were in my cup, I could do that but it was be difficult to measure it after it froze because this week keeps getting colder and no day will be identical to that day.

Overall, I really enjoyed this experiment and i think it would be a fun experiment when teaching kids. It’s something to keep the children wondering "what will happen next" and it will also allow them to see change and how to use a ruler to measure certain things out.

2.Relate your thoughts on this experiment to the scientific question "Is the earth warming?"
When trying to related this scientific question to "Is the earth warmning", I actually found it slightly difficult and I didn't know what I wanted to say. Beacuse truthfully i have heard that its warming but haven't seen first hand. I know that polar bears are having a hard time living and we are affecting out earth by the trash and pollution we put in it, but its very difficult to actually say it is melting because i dont have evidience to really support it. I did do re-search, but it would be easier for me to say yes or no if i saw it first hand. I do think we as people do need to be more earth friendly though and make sure we take care of our earth and make smart choices. Even with the price of gas rising, i think car pooling is a excellent option because its saving on money but also saving on the pollution we put into the earth.

I think it is warming, but like said earlier it is hard for me to actually identify because i haven't seen it first hand. I have seen people damange the earth but ive only read that the earths temperature is fluctuating and animals who need cold weather and ice are getting harder to come by because they are loosing their homes.
