Activity 1 1-18-11

In a candle:

Whats burning? Show the chemcial formula and an image of the structure.

Chemical Formula of the candle-C25H52

In a candle the burning part is the wax. The wax is burning and then turing into a liquid.

Wax structure is in two fatty acids

Chemical formula for the wax of a chemical- C20H42 -> C40H82 or C25H52

What is the chemical reaction?
C25 H52 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O

Write the balanced chemcial reaction?

     Unbalanced: C25H52 + O2 → CO2 + H2O

     Balanced: C25H52 + 38 O2 → 25 CO2 + 26 H2O

Class Example!
Butane-
     unbalanced- C4H10 + O2 -> H2o + 4CO2

     balanced- 2C4H10 +13O2 -> 10H2O + 8CO2

What does butane O(shaded in circle) O2O look like?
     2 shaded in circles- not touching
    13 open circles- not touching

   ( No order, just moving around randomly)
